Vasara Romeka
Charlotte's closest ally and colleague
Vasara Romeka is a Taskforce 12 IT specialist, former intelligence officer and operative with a mysterious past, she serves as Charlotte Kominsky’s closest companion, best friend and emotional counterbalance.
Background
Very little is known about Vasara's birth. We only know that she's a Lithuanian national, born in Vilnius, and grew up in Philadelphia. It is known that she served in the American Navy before working for the CIA and resigning to integrate Taskforce 12 and working for Heather Reed. She has operated under multiple identities, traversing European intelligence circles with ease, and eventually became affiliated with MI6 operations through her work dismantling trafficking and extremist cells.
She is the latest operative working with Heather for Taskforce 12, as she works now for the Metropolitan Police, whilst being affiliated with the Lithuanian police.
Vasara and Charlotte first briefly met in All the Battles I Have Lost, though their bond solidifies in The Sum of All Our Fears, where she becomes an unofficial bodyguard, confidante, and partner in Charlotte’s investigations. Her motivations are rarely verbalised, but her commitment to Charlotte is total, and their relationship transcends mere operational necessity.
Appearance
Vasara is tall, elegant, and physically imposing, with a statuesque presence that commands attention. She has platinum blonde hair, typically tied back or cut in a practical style, and cool grey or icy blue eyes that give little away. Her clothing is functional, dark tactical gear or minimalist professional wear, often with a high collar or combat boots. She wears no unnecessary accessories.
Her posture is straight, her movements precise, and her aura almost mechanical, until moments of rare emotional intimacy with Charlotte reveal a softer human beneath the armour.
Personality
Vasara is analytical, introverted, and ruthlessly competent. She rarely speaks unless necessary, preferring to communicate through action or silence. Her emotional detachment isn’t a lack of feeling, it’s a survival mechanism honed over years in espionage and violence. She is also known to be a borderline personality, extremely sarcastic, and hates working with people she deems incompetent.
Despite her cold exterior, she displays deep emotional intelligence, especially in the way she responds to Charlotte’s trauma. She does not comfort with words or clichés, she offers presence, silence, and strength. She is protective, never possessive, and though deeply loyal, she remains independent and fully in control of her own identity.
Her sense of morality is pragmatic. She has killed, lied, and manipulated, but never without cause.
Relationship with Charlotte Kominsky
The bond between Vasara and Charlotte is one of the emotional pillars of the series. Though not romantic, their relationship is one of profound intimacy and mutual recognition. Charlotte often refers to Vasara as “her constant,” someone who cannot be shaken, manipulated, or intimidated. Vasara sees Charlotte’s pain without exploiting it and offers strength without expectation.
Where others betray, abandon, or misunderstand Charlotte, Vasara understands her instinctively, perhaps because she, too, carries damage she never names. Their closeness transcends roles: they are not just teammates, but twin survivors navigating a battlefield of secrets and shattered innocence.
Role in the Story
In The Sum of All Our Fears, Vasara acts as both an operative and a guardian. She protects Charlotte during operations, gathers intelligence, and interrogates suspects with calculated efficiency. She is instrumental in uncovering the trafficking networks tied to Kelly Royer and Joris Laurent, and her presence allows Charlotte to operate with greater freedom and security.
Legacy and Themes
Vasara embodies themes of silence, loyalty, and post-traumatic resilience. She is a survivor of violence who has turned her pain into purpose. She does not seek redemption, only function and fidelity to those she chooses to protect.
She is also a commentary on what it means to endure: not loudly, not tragically, but with discipline, detachment, and a blade always at the ready.
