Marc Beauregard
Charlotte's colleague
Marc Beauregard is a senior French military intelligence officer, working alongside Heather Reed and her team in Taskforce 12. Beauregard plays a key role in operations against networks and human trafficking rings in France.
Background
Having studied at the Saint-Cyr military school and obtained a degree there, Marc Beauregard became a high-ranking officer within the French Direction du renseignement militaire (DRM) and remained affiliated with the Gendarmerie Nationale. He has a long-standing career in the armed forces, with deep involvement in counter-terrorism operations across Europe and the Middle East.
Beauregard has been working with Heather Reed since 2009 on the investigation.
Appearance
Beauregard is a man in his late 50s, married and father of one daughter, with a strong, weathered frame, salt-and-pepper hair, and a face marked by years of field service. He wears his military uniform with visible pride, often adorned with a medal of the Ordre national du Mérite and his officer’s insignia.
He carries himself with soldierly precision, back straight, voice calm, and expression unreadable. His presence in any room commands immediate attention, though he rarely raises his voice. His French flag lapel pin and polished officer boots are symbolic of his loyalty to the Republic above all else.
Personality
Marc Beauregard is composed, authoritative, and uncompromising in matters of duty. He values order, honour, and truth, but has also learned the cost of blindly following protocol. Decades in counter-insurgency have made him suspicious of easy answers and political interference.
Unlike many officials Charlotte encounters, Beauregard is direct and principled. He believes in working across borders and ideologies if it serves justice. He is not easily shocked, but visibly troubled by the details of trafficking cases and the failures of the French system to protect its youth.
Though emotionally guarded, he is not without empathy, especially for younger operatives like Charlotte. His sternness is never cruel; it is the discipline of a man who has seen too much loss to act without care.
Relationship with Charlotte Kominsky
Charlotte’s rapport with Beauregard is unusual. Initially wary of another “uniform”, she quickly realises that Beauregard is one of the few senior figures who genuinely listen. Their interactions are marked by respect, sharp conversation, and unspoken solidarity. He does not patronise her; she does not manipulate him.
Though they clash at times over methodology, he sees Charlotte’s fire as necessary. He serves as a silent mentor of sorts, showing her that not all state actors are morally bankrupt and that justice can still be pursued from within.
Role in the Story
Beauregard’s role in The Sum of All Our Fears is strategic and symbolic. He helps authorise cross-border operations, protects Charlotte’s actions from internal sabotage, and ensures that evidence is not buried by corrupt prosecutors like Jean-Marie Duval. He often acts as the moral and institutional counterweight to figures like Mike Whittingham or Heather Reed, offering a uniquely French perspective within the alliance.
He is a guardian of the republic, but one who has stopped pretending the republic is always right.
